Vitovska is a unique white grape variety grown exclusively in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy. Unlike many other grape varieties, it does not have widespread cultivation outside this specific area.
An interesting point of clarification is that Vitovska and Vitovska Grganja are not the same; they are distinct varieties despite any similarities in name.
The renaissance of Vitovska began in the 1960s, largely due to the efforts of Luigi Lupinac, a dedicated small wine producer from San Pelagio di Prepotto. Recognizing the potential of Vitovska, Lupinac embarked on a meticulous process of field selection. He grafted the Vitovska vines onto American rootstocks, a method used to increase the vines’ resistance to pests and diseases. This propagation process was critical in preserving and revitalizing the grape. Lupinac’s innovative approach did not stop at cultivation. He was also instrumental in bottling the finished wine, showcasing Vitovska’s unique qualities and bringing it to the market. His pioneering work set the stage for the grape’s resurgence, helping to elevate its status and appreciation within the wine community.
Today, Vitovska is celebrated for its distinct characteristics and the dedication of producers like Lupinac who recognized and nurtured its potential. The grape’s revival is a testament to the passion and perseverance of local winemakers committed to preserving and promoting their regional heritage.
