- By the 1800s, this grape variety was already highly regarded for producing some of the finest wines in the Ancona area of the Marche region. However, its popularity and cultivation saw a sharp decline over the next century. By 1893, authorities believed it to be nearly extinct. This trend continued, and by the end of the 20th century, less than 50 hectares were planted with this grape.
- The grape variety is particularly well-suited to marly-sandy soils, where it can thrive and exhibit its best qualities. It is known for its vigorous growth and the ability to produce hefty yields without compromising on quality. This combination of robustness and productivity makes it a valuable, albeit rare, asset in viticulture.
- Despite its near extinction, the grape has shown a remarkable ability to adapt and flourish under the right conditions, ensuring that it can still produce exceptional wines when given the opportunity.

Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG is a delightful sparkling wine, crafted through secondary fermentation in the bottle, akin to a richer, fuller-bodied Lambrusco. This wine captivates with its intense bouquet of red rose, violet, black cherry, and inky aromas and flavors, creating a sensory experience that’s both vibrant and profound.
In addition to its traditional sparkling form, Vernaccia di Serrapetrona can also be made in a sweet (passito) style. The grape variety’s natural affinity for air drying enhances its sweetness and depth, resulting in a luscious, richly flavored wine. This versatility and depth of character make Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG a standout in the world of Italian sparkling wines.
