Verduzzo Friulano, alongside Picolit and Ribolla Gialla, holds a revered status as one of Friuli Venezia Giulia‘s iconic grape varieties. Within this esteemed region, two distinct subvarieties of Verduzzo Friulano thrive: Verduzzo Giallo and Verduzzo Verde, each unique in character and expression. It’s important to note that these are separate from Verduzzo Trevigiano, which is typical of the neighboring Veneto region.
Verduzzo Verde predominantly finds its home in the flatland vineyards of Friuli Venezia Giulia, where it is carefully cultivated to produce dry white wines of exceptional quality. Meanwhile, Verduzzo Giallo, often regarded as the superior subvariety, enjoys widespread acclaim for its remarkable attributes.
Over time, a perception emerged favoring Verduzzo Giallo, leading growers in Friuli Venezia Giulia to gradually reduce cultivation of Verduzzo Verde. As a result, Verduzzo Verde has become increasingly rare compared to its historical prevalence.
When labeled simply as Verduzzo, the wine typically embodies an off-dry, light-bodied white characterized by its distinctive traits. If crafted predominantly with Verduzzo Verde, it exudes a delicate profile, showcasing subtle floral nuances intertwined with lively citrus notes. Conversely, when Verduzzo Giallo takes center stage, the wine unveils a richer tapestry of aromas and flavors, teasing the senses with hints of acacia honey and ripe apricots.
Although dry Verduzzo wines are crafted, their elevated tannic content poses a risk of imparting bitterness. Nevertheless, in every iteration of Verduzzo, a hallmark note of sweet almonds prevails, gracing both the nose and palate with its presence. This signature essence intensifies in sweeter renditions, evolving into decadent nuances of marzipan and caramelized almonds.
Adding to its allure, Verduzzo boasts a distinctive tannic finish—a rare characteristic among white grape varieties—that lingers on the palate, leaving a lasting impression of depth and complexity.
