Few grape varieties in Italy carry as lackluster a reputation as Trebbiano Toscano, often linked with the creation of uninspiring and bland white wines.
Despite its historical associations with neutrality, Trebbiano Toscano has played a crucial role in the development of several noteworthy crossings, including Fubiano, Manzoni Rosa, and even contributing to the creation of one of the world’s rare successful hybrid grapes – Vidal, resulting from a cross between Trebbiano Toscano and Seibel 4986.
Remarkably, despite its reputation, Trebbiano Toscano stands as Italy’s most widely planted white grape variety and ranks as the seventh most planted grape globally.

Widely cultivated across Italy, Trebbiano Toscano assumes a pivotal role in numerous wine blends. Its versatility extends to the production of many Tuscan IGT wines and holds particular significance in the made of Vin Santo, a cherished traditional Tuscan wine. Despite its ubiquity, Trebbiano Toscano remains distinguished by its high acidity, even when harvested late, making it a valuable component in white wine blends seeking an invigorating lift.
Yet, while Trebbiano Toscano lends its acidity to enhance blends, its aromatic complexity and depth of flavor often present limitations. In my experience, wines crafted solely from Trebbiano Toscano exhibit delicate herbal notes, zesty lemon undertones, and a refreshing freshness. Even the finest examples, however, fall short of achieving a rich, dense, or mouth-coating texture.
