Rondinella, known as one of Italy’s bird-inspired grapes, owes its name to the rich hue of its berry skin, reminiscent of the dark plumage of the swift swallow, or “rondine” in Italian. Alternatively, it could be a nod to the grape-loving small birds that delight in its ripe clusters.
Its prominence in the Italian viticultural landscape surged following the devastation wrought by phylloxera.
In the vineyards of Valpolicella, Rondinella is easily identified not only by its distinctive leaves but also by its compact bunches, slightly curved and adorned with medium-sized, round berries.
Rondinella plays an indispensable role in the making of Recioto, thanks to its remarkable ability to accumulate sugars, surpassing that of other varietals employed in the process. However, it is not as highly regarded when vinified as a standalone dry wine. In this capacity, it tends to yield wines with neutral profiles, occasionally punctuated by subtle herbal nuances at best.
