- Rifòsc dal Pecòl Rosso
/refˈosko dˈel pedˈunkolo rˈos͡so/
- Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, probably Friuli Venezia Giulia‘s best-known red grape variety, was first differentiated in literature in 1877.
- It stands out from the myriad Refoscos because it ripens one to two weeks earlier and is distinguished by its stalk, which turns red when the grapes are fully ripe.
- The variety has a fascinating lineage: Teroldego, through spontaneous crosses with an unknown variety, gave rise to Lagrein in Trentino Alto Adige, and Marzemino in Lombardy. Subsequently, Marzemino and another unknown parent likely birthed Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso in Friuli.
Map of historic hometown
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso wines are by far the most complex among those made from Refosco varieties. They offer intriguing aromas and flavors of dried red cherries, fresh herbs, almonds, and flowers such as lavender, geranium, and violet. However, these wines can sometimes be short on the palate, with their initially intense and seductive aromas and flavors failing to linger. Additionally, the tannins can be quite tough, often more aggressive and astringent than those found in wines made from Refosco Nostrano.
