- Nerello Mascalese’s name derives from Mascali, the plain northeast of the city of Catania that separates it from the sea, as well as from the name of a township north of Riposto near Catania, from where ships full of Nerello wine left for other shores.
- Nerello Mascalese is a natural crossing of Sangiovese and Mantonico Bianco, which would also make it a sibling of Gaglioppo.
- Nerello Mascalese is an abundant but irregular producer, and it’s not particularly resistant to common vine disease, especially botrytis bunch rot and odium.
Map of historic hometown
Nerello Mascalese wines are renowned for their exquisite purity, boasting captivating aromas and flavors that evoke sensations of tart red cherries, nuanced tobacco, fragrant aromatic herbs, and delicate mineral notes. This varietal’s wines are distinguished by their pronounced herbal and tobacco nuances, offering a sensory journey that captures the essence of the terroir. Contrasting with the slightly more floral characteristics found in wines crafted from Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese showcases a rich tapestry of herbal and tobacco complexity, adding depth and intrigue to each sip.
