Marzemino and Lagrein trace their lineage back to Teroldego and another parent, the latter speculated to possibly be a descendant of Pinot Nero. Predominantly cultivated in Trentino, with additional plantings scattered across Lombardy, Marzemino also finds niche plantings in regions like Emilia-Romagna, Abruzzo, and Sardinia.
In Trentino, Marzemino boasts two esteemed crus: Isera DOC, situated on the right bank of the Adige River, and another on the opposite side of the valley. Among these, the renowned Ziresi stands as the grand cru, its name inspired by the cherry trees that adorn the landscape.
Marzemino presents a challenging winemaking process due to its highly reductive nature, necessitating careful exposure to oxygen during vinification. To prevent the development of off-putting aromas, winemakers employ frequent rackings and returns, ensuring the wine retains its pristine character.
A fine wine will evoke memories of tangy sour red berries, fragrant violets, and subtle hints of delicate fresh herbs, all harmoniously intertwined. With its elevated acidity and a medium-weight body, this wine exudes a wild, herbal essence that tantalizes the senses. Its distinctive character is further accentuated by a characteristic slightly bitter touch on the finish, leaving a lasting impression of complexity and refinement.
