Malvasia Bianca Lunga stands as one of the parents, alongside Garganega, of Italy’s esteemed laboratory crossing, Incrocio Bianco Fedit 51. Additionally, it has been found to share close genetic ties with Malvasia Istriana and Malvasia di Lipari, further enriching its lineage.
One of its notable claims to fame lies in its historical role within the Chianti blend, as advocated by Bettino Ricasoli. Ricasoli believed that the ultimate Chianti recipe comprised seven parts Sangiovese, two parts Canaiolo Nero, and one part Malvasia Bianca Lunga. While Malvasia Bianca Lunga was phased out of the blend in 2006, its legacy in Chianti’s winemaking history remains significant.
Beyond its contributions to Chianti, Malvasia Bianca Lunga is also revered for its role in the production of Vin Santo, either as a standalone varietal or in conjunction with Trebbiano Toscano.
