  • Lazio has a winemaking history that dates back to ancient Rome. The region was once a major wine supplier to the Roman Empire, with wines like Falernian and Caecuban being highly prized by Roman elites.
  • Est! Est!! Est!!! – this uniquely named wine comes from Montefiascone. Legend has it that a German bishop traveling to Rome sent his servant ahead to mark inns with good wine by writing “Est” (Latin for “It is”). At Montefiascone, the wine was so good that the servant wrote “Est! Est!! Est!!!” The wine is made primarily from Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes.

  • Lazio is home to a variety of indigenous and international grape varieties. Native varieties like Malvasia Puntinata, Trebbiano Giallo, and Cesanese are prominent, alongside international ones like Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lazio is characterized by its volcanic origins, particularly in areas like the Castelli Romani and around Lake Bolsena. These volcanic soils are rich in minerals, providing an ideal environment for vine cultivation. The nutrients in the soil contribute to the distinct flavors and high quality of the wines produced in these regions.

The eastern part of Lazio is bordered by the Apennine Mountains. These mountains influence the climate by providing cooler temperatures and higher altitudes, which are beneficial for certain grape varieties. The Apennines also contribute to the region’s diverse microclimates.
