The name of the variety stems from the shape of its leaf, which is nearly perfectly round (foglia tonda translates to “round leaf”).
It’s important not to mistake it for another round-leafed variety known as Foja Tonda or Lambrusco a Foglia Tonda.
Foglia Tonda is an ancient grape variety with purported ties to Sangiovese, believed to be indigenous to the Chianti Classico region.
Officially permitted for cultivation in the provinces of Pisa, Florence, and Siena, Foglia Tonda holds significance within these areas.

The wines are distinguished by softer acidity and tannins compared to those crafted with Sangiovese, making it an ideal complement to Sangiovese in blends, imparting body and complexity.
As monovarietal wines, they evoke notes of red currant, dried plums, and cinnamon, complemented by nuances of tobacco. Blessed with robust yet velvety tannins and elevated acidity, these wines boast a dark ruby-red color tinged with garnet.
