The Sagrantino di Montefalco DOCG designation highlights the grape’s importance in the region.
  • Umbria is home to Orvieto, a historic hilltop town renowned for its crisp white wines. Orvieto Classico, produced in the region surrounding the town, is made primarily from the indigenous Grechetto and Trebbiano grapes. These wines are appreciated for their refreshing acidity and citrusy notes.
  • Umbria’s diverse topography encompasses rolling hills, river valleys, and volcanic slopes, providing a range of terroirs for viticulture. Vineyards are often planted at elevations that maximize sunlight exposure and airflow, promoting grape ripening while preserving acidity and freshness.

Umbria is characterized by its mountainous terrain, with the northern part of the region dominated by the Apennine Mountains. These mountains provide a varied landscape of hills and valleys, influencing the microclimates and soil compositions of different winegrowing areas.

Parts of Umbria, particularly around the town of Orvieto, sit atop ancient volcanic formations. Volcanic soils, rich in minerals and nutrients, contribute to the terroir of the region’s vineyards, imparting unique characteristics to the wines produced there.

Umbria experiences a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild winters. This climate is conducive to grape cultivation, providing ample sunshine for ripening grapes while mitigating the risk of frost damage during the growing season.
