  • Winemaking in Marche dates back to the Etruscans and Romans. The region has a long history of viticulture, and many ancient techniques are still in use today, combined with modern winemaking practices.
  • Marche is renowned for its Verdicchio wines, particularly Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica. These wines are celebrated for their crisp acidity, floral aromas, and the signature almond note on the finish. Verdicchio is often considered one of Italy’s finest white grape varieties.
  • While Verdicchio is the star, Marche also produces excellent red wines. Montepulciano and Sangiovese are the primary red grapes, with Rosso Conero and Rosso Piceno being the notable red wine DOCs. These wines are known for their robust structure, rich fruit flavors, and aging potential.

Marche is situated along Italy’s eastern coast, bordering the Adriatic Sea. The coastal areas benefit from maritime influences, including cooling sea breezes that moderate temperatures and create favorable conditions for viticulture.

The western part of Marche is characterized by the Appennine mountain range, which runs along the region’s border with Umbria and Tuscany. The mountainous terrain provides diverse altitudes and microclimates, influencing grape growing and wine styles.

Several rivers flow through Marche, including the Metauro, Esino, and Tronto rivers. These waterways not only sustain the region’s agriculture but also shape the landscape and provide irrigation for vineyards.
